The U-2 is a reconnaissance aircraft that provides continuous day and night, high-altitude, all-weather surveillance and
reconnaissance in direct support of U.S. and allied ground and air forces. It provides critical intelligence to decision makers
through all phases of conflict, including peacetime indications and warnings, crises, low-intensity conflict and large-scale
hostilities. I had a reader challenge me on the use of U-2s in Point of Honor. That was 4 years ago. I will point out that in
January 2003, UNSCOM was complaining that Iraq had prohibited U-2 over-flights. This plane has been the workhorse of
battlefield reconnaissance.
The Blackhawk is the workhorse of the modern Army. Available in a variety of models, it can be configured for a
variety of missions including SAR and ASW. It can ferry 14 combat soldiers or a large Jeep.
UNIX is the mainstay operating system of the information age (no it is not Windows!) When you really need to get
something done and you cannot afford to have your system spontaneously reboot, freeze, be subject to nasty hackers or you
have a real computer, UNIX is probably the operating system of choice.
United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) were tasked with seeking out Iraqi WMD. There needs to be
a distinction between the team run under Richard Butler, who made a good faith effort to find WMD (with the possible
exception of the French, who continued to pass the current search list to the Iraqis), and the Keystone Kops wandering around
behind Hans Blix.
This was the American operation that liberated Grenada on October 25, 1983. Grenada is a southern
Caribbean Island located below St Vincent. At the southern tip of the Island, near Port Salinas, Cuban engineers (you know
the kind you find with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades) were building a 10,000 foot runway to service nuclear
capable, Soviet heavy bombers. While there were a number of logistical and coordination problems, URGENT FURY proved
America could and would defend its vital interests with military force in the post-Vietnam era.
United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has three service component commands: Army
Special Operations Command (USASOC) Ft. Bragg, NC; Naval Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWARCOM)
Coronado, CA; Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) Hurlburt Field, FL; and one sub-unified command, Joint
Special Operations Command (JSOC) Ft. Bragg, NC. USSOCOM exists to provide special operations forces to the National
Command Authority (NCA), regional combatant commanders, and American ambassadors and their country teams successful
conduct of special operations during both peace and war. USSOCOM prepares SOF to successfully conduct special
operations, including civil affairs and psychological operations.
The United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) is the command and control center for U.S.
strategic forces and controls military space operations, computer network operations, information operations, strategic warning
and intelligence assessments as well as global strategic planning. It is located at Offutt Air Force Base outside Omaha,
Nebraska. This used to the HQ for the Strategic Air Command.
A 9mm SMG designed by Israeli Major Uziel Gal. This is one of most prolific post-war designs of the second half of the
20th century. This is a simple blow back design that works in several different environments.
